I just wanted to share a poem that really got to me today. Enjoy!
Two girls discover
the secret of life
in a sudden line of
poetry.
I who don’t know
the secret
wrote the line. They
told me
(through a third person)
they had found it
but not what it was
not even
what line it was. No doubt
by now, more than a week
later, they have forgotten
the secret,
the line, the name of
the poem. I love them
for finding what
I can’t find,
and for loving me
for the line I wrote
and for forgetting it
so that
a thousand times, till death
finds them, they may
discover it again, in other
lines
in other
happenings. And for
wanting to know it,
for
assuming there is
such a secret, yes,
for that,
most of all.
A very interesting and thought-provoking poem and perfect for those of us hoping to inspire others with our words.
Thanks for the like on my blog. I’m trying to get out more and share the love.
I also love the poetry of Denise Levertov.
This is truly beautiful! Thank you for sharing – and thank you for the “like” on my poem.
I like that poem also.
A friend of mine, who was also my mentor, gave me a copy of this poem before he died. I’ve carried it with me for so long it has become tattered and torn. I finally had to retire it from my wallet simply because it was falling apart. Thank you for reminding me of it. It’s been a while since I last read it, and it still has the same meaning to me.
